If you’re not on social media websites, like Facebook and Twitter, you may have missed Social Media Day yesterday. But, when it comes to social media, what are you missing really? That’s what we asked our community during a Regus-sponsored Hot Desk discussion yesterday: ‘What good is social media anyway?’

Our aim was to find out whether social media was really good for business or just a lot of hype.

The answer we got? A resounding ‘Yes!’ Social media, you told us, is very good for business – and you gave us a lot of reasons why.

Last weekend Rickie ran an ‘offline’ event – and credits social media for 70% of its success. “There is amazing community spirit on Facebook and Twitter,” she said.

Michelle, who works for Digital Enterprise Glasgow, says her organisation has saved lots of money by using social media, instead of traditional marketing and advertising efforts.

“I don’t think social media is a passing fad,” Michelle said. “It’s definitely changing how we communicate and lets the consumer have more of a voice.”

Facebook, the biggest social media website, highlighted the most concern for business owners.

“Facebook has proved more an irritant than anything else,” said Colin.

What about you? Are you having success marketing your business on Facebook? Share your views and read those of other Bitsy members in our Hot Desk discussion: What good is social media anyway?

I love social media – I think it’s a real game changer for small business. it allows us to connect with people that were previously un-touchable and connect with customers and prospects in a way that is real. It can be used for PR, Market Research, Building brand awareness, Customer Loyalty, making sales … the list goes on. But it is a long term game and you need to be ACTIVE!
